In a practice becoming more frequent in southern Maine, police brought in a dozen dogs to search Falmouth High School for drugs. This search was different from usual searches, however, in that while the inside of school buildings are often searched, in this case it was the parking lot and the cars outside that received attention. As a result of the search, two students were charged with possession of marijuana. Police were allowed to search the vehicles because it is considered probable cause to search if a police dog thinks it smells a controlled substance, since, according to one police officer, their noses are "very sensitive."
